Plantar fasciitis

When the plantar fascia (a cord of connective tissue that bridges the ball and heel of the foot together) is inflamed and overstressed, the heel will feel achy and tender. Many patients who suffer from plantar fasciitis report feeling pain in the heel, often occurring first thing in the morning and fading throughout the day when they walk and stretch the foot.

Spurs

Tendons, muscles, and other connective tissue throughout the foot can be subjected to sudden and extreme pressures, either by twisting the foot or falling. These injuries, or sprains, often ache and can make heel movement and stepping extremely painful. If you have recently suffered an accident, your heel pain may have been caused by such an injury.

Reactive arthritis

Heel pain and swelling can be caused by an infection (or be the result of one), causing arthritic-like symptoms. While these symptoms are usually confined to the larger joints, infection-related soreness can also affect your ankle, heel, and foot area. Notify our team of podiatrists if you have suffered from a bacterial infection or other form of infection recently.

Achilles tendonitis

The Achilles tendon, when inflamed, can cause stabbing, burning, and aching pain in the heel. This pain in the tendon, known as tendonitis, is usually caused by overuse or from an injury. If the condition is left untreated, the tendon may eventually tear.

Heel pain FAQs

It can be challenging to determine if you need to schedule a visit with a foot doctor. Sometimes heel pain goes away as tendons and ligaments stretch, or the pain might be bearable. Ask yourself these important questions if you’re trying to decide whether or not you should make an appointment:

  • Do I need assistance to walk?
  • Does the pain come back throughout the day?
  • Has it been longer than five days without relief?
  • Is the pain constant, even when I’m sitting or lying down?
  • Have I had an injury or accident recently?

If you’ve answered “yes” to any of these questions, you should make an appointment immediately. Our Scottsdale podiatry team is ready and waiting to help you and your family work through this pain!
