April Is National Foot Health Awareness Month
Did you know that April has been set aside as a National Foot Health Awareness Month? If you’re wondering why foot health merits an entire month set aside for it, all you need to do is consider the fact that your feet support you each and every day of your life. Whether you are climbing in or out of bed, walking to the car on your way to work or school, or taking your morning jog, your feet are experiencing pressure at the very least and pain at the worst.
Problems Your Feet Might Experience
Even if you are careful about the type of shoes that you wear, your feet can undergo damage at the smallest incident. Many of the issues affecting the feet are minor, but for some individuals, they can become quite serious. Opportunistic infections like nail fungus can develop at any time, but particularly when the conditions are right for it. Nail fungus often begins to grow if your feet sweat a lot, particularly during the colder months when you wear socks to bed or heavy woolen socks all day long. Of course, certain types of medical conditions, such as diabetes, can also encourage nail fungus to grow.
Ingrown toenails are often the result of trimming your nails improperly, but they can just as easily develop if you wear your shoes too tight or drop something heavy onto your toes. If you don’t have an ingrown toenail taken care of by a physician, it might develop an infection. This would result in a longer healing time and possibly a lot of discomfort.
Plantars warts are uncomfortable and usually continue to grow until you have them removed. Since plantars warts are contagious, it is easy to pick them up at the gym or public swimming pool. Try to avoid walking barefooted in public areas to help prevent warts and do not ignore changes in your skin.
Hammertoes are often the result of wearing shoes that are too tight or narrow, particularly if the toe is somewhat longer than the rest of your toes. Hammertoes are easiest to deal with in their early stages, so getting to a podiatrist for treatment as soon as you notice that you have this condition is a good idea. If the problem is ignored too long a surgical correction is the most effective treatment.
Bunions are deformities that occur at the base of your big toe. They usually take a number of years to fully develop. While this isn’t necessarily a genetic issue, people with certain types of foot structure might be more prone to developing bunions, which are actually changes occurring in the bony part of the foot near the big toe.
