Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is frustrating and disrupting, especially when you’re not sure what’s causing it. Most people experiencing heel pain are affected by Plantar Fasciitis, a stress fracture, tendonitis, arthritis, or nerve irritation. The most common cause of heel pain and arch pain is micro-tearing in the plantar fascia. The plantar fascia is a tendon-like structure that runs along the bottom of the foot, connecting your toes and calcaneus (heel) bone. This structure is typically strong and flexible, but one micro-tear from excessive weight gain or improper support can cause immense pain and irritation. 

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

 

Plantar Fasciitis is when the foot excessively flattens or becomes unstable during the gait cycle. Once the foot flattens, the attachment of the plantar fascia onto the calcaneus will start to stretch and pull away from each other. This condition is extremely painful but easily treatable if addressed early.

What Causes Plantar Fascia?

The fascia is typically strong and flexible but can be torn due to to the following factors. If any of these factors apply to you, you may have trouble walking, feel extreme irritation and inflammation in your heel, and/or feel weakened while you move.   • Excessive weight gain 
  • Recent change in non-supportive footwear
  • Advancement in age 
  • Improper foot support

Treatment Options for Plantar Fasciitis

If treated early, Plantar Fasciitis can be treated without surgery. If you’re experiencing any sort of pain or discomfort, make an appointment. Plantar Fasciitis, or the micro-tearing of the plantar fascia, can take time a long time to develop and you may not experience extreme pain until it’s too late to opt out of surgery. Keep in mind that Plantar Fasciitis isn’t a condition that can be quickly treated. Continue to take preventative measures to protect your heels and reduce your pain. 

  • Avoid soft heel cushions. Although it may temporarily relieve your foot pain,  it will not address the root of your problem.Your painful heels will return after time. 
  • Get a custom foot orthotic. This custom foot insert will stabilize your heel, prevent excess pronation, and prevent excessive lengthening and tearing of the plantar fascia.
  • Wear a night splint. This will minimize your morning pain and allow you to maintain an extended stretch while you sleep.
  • Change shoes. Make sure to choose shoes that support your entire foot. Taping your foot may also help relieve your pain. 
  • If you’re overweight, loosing weight will significantly reduce your pain. Work with your primary care doctor to develop a healthy diet and a physical therapist to aid in your journey. 
  • Get a cortisone (steroid) injection. This will significantly reduce your pain. 
What are Heel Spurs and How Do They Relate to Plantar Fasciitis?

Heel spurs develop at the bottom of the calcaneus in addition to plantar fasciitis. This is not the bone growing but rather the inflammation of the fascia attaching to the heel. This condition is extremely discomforting.

How Do You Diagnose and Treat Heel Spurs?

 

  Heel spurs can be diagnosed by taking a lateral x-ray of the foot. Sometimes these lateral x-rays reveal large heel spurs that don’t produce pain. The onset of a heel spur is gradual, but many people experience pain while taking their first steps in the morning and walking after extended breaks.
